THE BOURNE STANDARD™ · BGIPA
Performing-Arts Development Standards™
A serious arts institution should be able to explain what it is trying to develop—not only what classes it offers.
Development should become increasingly visible.
Across disciplines, BGIPA looks for growth in what a student can hear, understand, prepare, solve, communicate, perform and evaluate with increasing independence.
Standards are developmental, not merely comparative.
Age, stage, discipline and objective matter. A young beginner, an emerging artist and an advanced professional should not be judged by the same immediate output. The standard is whether the work is becoming more capable, informed, responsible and repeatable for the stage the person is actually in.
Evidence can take different forms.
Observation, repertoire, assessments, performances, auditions, examinations, self-evaluation, faculty feedback and development reports can each contribute evidence. No single score or performance tells the whole story.
High standards require safeguards.
Excellence does not justify humiliation, inappropriate pressure, false promises or blurred professional boundaries. The Bourne Standard connects aspiration with trust, protections and responsible delivery.
The aim is not simply a better performance. It is a more capable artist.
Standards become useful when they shape teaching, assessment and boundaries—not when they remain aspirational language.
