ONE FAMILY’S JOURNEY
Rebecca Began With a Love of Performing. Her Path Revealed Itself Over Time.
Beverly Townsend’s story begins in a place many parents recognize: she could see musicality, personality and a love of performing in her daughter long before anyone could know what Rebecca’s future would become. Her testimony shows what can unfold when natural ability is met with sustained teaching, thoughtful challenge, growing confidence and family support over many years.
Rebecca Was Not a Career Plan. She Was a Child Who Loved to Perform.
Beverly remembers Rebecca babble-singing “Happy Birthday” in tune on her first birthday. At three, when the other little grasshoppers left the stage before the music had finished, Rebecca stayed and happily gave the audience her first impromptu solo. Years later, Beverly noticed the same child singing naturally through her dance routines and began wondering whether the voice deserved more.
That question eventually brought Rebecca to Cassandra’s Voice Studio. What followed was a long developmental journey: technique, musicianship, artistry, examinations, festivals, confidence-building, performance preparation and increasingly ambitious opportunities. Rebecca eventually auditioned for schools including Juilliard, Curtis, Boston Conservatory, Western and the University of Toronto; accepted a scholarship to U of T; completed both a Bachelor of Music with honours standing and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance; and later built a professional career in the classical-music industry.
Beverly’s reflection captures the deeper transformation behind those achievements:

There Is Something Beautiful About Watching a Young Person Grow Into Their Own Artistry.
Grandparents, siblings, extended family and close friends may know your child’s music mainly through the moments when they are invited to listen—a recital, concert, examination celebration, festival performance or another special occasion. They see the young artist step forward and share what they have prepared, but they may know much less about the growth that made that moment possible.
Behind a performance can be months of learning: a technical breakthrough, a deeper understanding of the music, greater confidence in making artistic choices, the courage to try again after something is difficult, and the gradual discovery of how the young artist wants to communicate with an audience.
For students in ELITE™ and DIRECTOR’S STUDIO™, BGE creates selected family and community experiences that invite the people closest to the young artist to understand and celebrate more of that development. These experiences are an enhanced benefit of those advanced pathways and are not included in CORE™.
The purpose is to let family members come closer to the journey—so they can appreciate the work behind the performance, recognize how the young artist is growing, and share meaningful moments as those gifts become more confident and expressive.
